Are Drugstore Beetles Harmful?
A-Tex Pest Management takes care of a number of pantry pests and a major culprit in homes and business throughout the Greater Austin, Texas area is the Drugstore Beetle. Adult drugstore beetles are relatively small, only getting up to approximately 1/8” long. They are brown in color and have oval-shaped bodies. Viewed from above, their head is not visible, which causes these beetles to appear humped. Attracted to light, adults are able to fly and they favor herbs, but are also found in spices, flour, and cereal as well as non-edibles such as books, papers, leather, horn and fur. Drugstore beetles can infest many materials, contaminating food sources with their larvae, urine and feces which presents a problem for home and business owners. When drugstore beetles are present, adults can be seen buzzing around their food source or perching on surfaces. Discovering holes in packages from where they emerged is also a red flag.
