Occasional Invader Insect Pests in Austin, TX; Centipedes, Earwigs, Silverfish & More

|

Not too many people can say that they have never had a cockroach, ant, or spider intrude into their homes. There are pests that are more common than others that come into our homes, usually scaring us with their grotesque appearance and the knowledge that their bite or sting will either be painful or even a health risk. But what about the less common visitors that we spy from time to time. A-Tex Pest Management would like to shine the light on these occasional invaders that invade Greater Austin, Texas homes.

Occasional Insect Pests

Centipedes: Centipede, a loosely accurate name, which translates to 100 legs, is a little insect, that depending on the species, can have anywhere between 15-177 pairs of legs. Centipedes can be found in several colors and patterns but are typically brown and reddish-orange with elongated, flat, segmented bodies that contain a pair of legs per segment. Again, depending on the species, their size also varies. They feature a small mouth with large, claw-like structures that contain a venom gland and their heads have a pair of long and sensitive antennae. Most centipedes are active at night looking for food, which is mostly a carnivorous diet. Worms, spiders, and small vertebrates are the likely victims, to which they use their claws to paralyze their prey. When being handled, centipedes may be inclined to bite, causing severe pain, numbness, discoloration, and inflammation.
Earwigs: Earwigs do not burrow into the ears of people while they sleep, a common misconception, despite their name. Frightening to look at due to the pincers on the back of their abdomens, earwigs use these pincers for defensive purposes and for sparring with rival earwigs. Their slender bodies can range in size from 3/16” to 1 1/8” long and they have two pairs of wings.
Silverfish: Silverfish are notoriously known for favoring starchy foods, cereals, and flours, along with paper, books, and fabric. Silverfish can contribute to quite a bit of damage if the infestation is permitted for a length of time. If silverfish are found in your home it is usually because they are looking for food. Sanitation is the primary step in prevention; eliminate the food source, clear away all crumbs and other food sources by vacuuming regularly and cleaning up spills as soon as they occur. Books, magazines and newspapers that you no longer care you own should be discarded to avoid clutter, and properly store the ones you wish to hang on to. Routinely clean closets and other such storage areas as silverfish have a tendency to attract insects looking for nests, refuge, and convenient meals.
