Bat Removal in Georgetown

When Bat Activity Points to a Hidden Roost

A bat inside a room doesn’t necessarily confirm a colony. However, repeated sightings or consistent activity at one exterior opening may indicate a roost in an inaccessible area. An attic inspection can reveal evidence that isn’t visible from occupied parts of the building.

Conditions that warrant closer evaluation include:

• Evening activity: Bats repeatedly emerge from roofline or chimney gaps around dusk.
• Sounds in concealed spaces: Scratching, rustling, or squeaking comes from an attic, wall, or chimney.
• Droppings and staining: Dark droppings collect below an opening, or stains appear on building materials.
• Persistent odors: Guano or urine creates a noticeable ammonia-like smell.
• Affected insulation: Waste accumulates in attic materials and requires careful cleanup.

Bat guano can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum, the fungus associated with the respiratory illness histoplasmosis. Disturbing accumulated droppings may release contaminated dust, so cleanup requires appropriate protective equipment and handling procedures.

Texas Bat Exclusion Timing

Bat exclusion allows bats to leave a structure while preventing them from returning through the same openings. It differs from chemical treatment or attempts to kill bats, and it must account for dependent young that may remain inside.

Texas Parks and Wildlife discourages excluding bats from buildings from May 1 through August 15. This period overlaps with maternity season, when colonies may include young bats that can’t yet fly. Sealing an active opening during this time could separate adults from their young or trap animals inside. We therefore evaluate current activity and seasonal timing before planning the work.

From Bat Inspection to Exclusion, Sealing, & Cleanup

Each recommendation reflects the building, active openings, potential secondary access points, and extent of contamination. Before service begins, we explain the conditions we observed and the proposed sequence of work.

A customized plan may include:

• Structure inspection: We inspect likely roost areas, active entry points, roof transitions, vents, soffits, eaves, and chimneys.
• Secondary-entry sealing: We address identified openings that could allow bats to move into another part of the structure.
• One-way exclusion devices: We install devices designed to let bats exit without re-entering through the same opening.
• Final sealing: We close the active access point after the exclusion period and an assessment for remaining activity.
• Cleanup and restoration: When appropriate, we remove guano and restore affected attic areas.
