How to Tell if You Have Termites in Your Rollingwood, TX House; Termite Frass, Mud Tubes & More

|

The last thing any homeowner wants to find out is that they have a termite infestation in their home. These destructive pests can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damages when they are left untreated. There are several signs that will be present when you are facing a termite infestation. A-Tex Pest Management is here to talk about these signs so that you can catch a termite infestation before you are facing costly repairs.

Signs of Termites

One of the most important things you can do to protect your home from a termite infestation is to be aware of them. You should constantly be watching for any signs that indicate you have termite activity near or in your home. Following is what to watch for:
– Flying Termite Swarmers: Sometimes flying termites can be mistaken for flying ants. You should be cautious anytime you see flying termites as these are males and females that have left their nest to start a new one. If you see them flying around your structure, you most definitely have a healthy termite colony around your home.
– Tight Fitting Doors & Windows: Don’t mistake your tight-fitting doors and windows for a hot, humid summer day. This can also be a sign that there are termites nestled deep into the structure of your home.
– Termite Frass Droppings: Frass is the word used to describe termite droppings. This often looks a lot like sawdust. It can also be small dark marks that are pushed out near the tunnels they use to eat and hollow out the wood.
– Termite Mud Tube Tunnels: Subterranean termites don’t actually live inside your home. They will build their nest outside your home, underground. To get to your home, they will build mud tube tunnels on the foundation of your home. If you see these small tunnels on your foundation, call a pest control expert right away.
– Hollow or Papery Sounding Wood: You can also tell that the wood has been severely damaged in a structure when you knock on the wood and it sounds hollow or feels weak and paper-like. You don’t want to find this in your home, but if you do, there is a problem.
– Insects that Look Like White Ants: If you notice white ants crawling around your home, don’t be fooled. These white ants are actually termites. Ants and termites look extremely similar and are often mistaken for each other. If you find white ants around your home, they aren’t likely ants, but rather termites.
