Norway Rats are similar to the roof rat, but are noticeably larger and chunkier. Their tail is shorter than the length of their body to their heads, averaging approximately 17” from tail to nose and weighing in between 14 and 17 ounces. They adapt well to being able to survive the outdoors as well as living indoors. Outside they are commonly found lurking in the vegetation that is tall and dense to provide adequate protection from common predators such as; spotted skunks, barn owls, and house cats to name a few. Outdoors they can also be found in burrows, under sidewalks or out buildings. Inside they prefer to find dwellings in basements or ground floors. Norway Rats prefer to be grounded, but can step out of their comfort zone and can climb great heights traveling along power lines and rooftops.
Norway Rat Diet
Norway Rats generally feed on plant and animal matter. In times where food may be scarce they will pick through the garbage, but they tend to favor vegetation, and grains in particular. In farming/ranching communities where poultry is raised, Norway Rats will consume eggs and young chicks. They have also been documented as to kill and devour lambs and young pigs.
Norway Rat Reproduction & Gestation
Their reproduction rate is fairly high. Gestation is between 21 and 23 days, and females can have 2-14 babies at a time, but average around 7. Norway Rats are very dependent on their mothers for survival for the first 2-4 weeks. Born hairless and blind it will take 14-17 days before their eyes can open and they do not typically wean away from their mothers until around 4 weeks. During the fall and winter months reproduction slows down, but they are capable of breeding year round. The Norway rat’s lifespan is between 2-3 years.
